UCLA Extension is considered one of the top programs of its kind, offering to more than 35,000 students per year approximately 4,500 classes and non-degree certificate programs to meet the professional development, continuing education and personal enrichment needs of the full spectrum of nontraditional students as well as companies and organizations throughout and beyond the Los Angeles region.

Position Description:

The Literary Community Intern will support and participate in activities that enhance the community of writers within the UCLA Extension Writers' Program. Tasks may include, but are not limited to providing research, support, planning, and coordination to the Writers' Program's events for 2022-2023: The Young Adult Symposium, the Writers Studio, the Annual Publication Party, a series of smaller reading events featuring students, events for our Writers' Program Network of Writers such as writer meetings and professional development events, and any Open Houses or other free community events. The Intern can also help assist with other community building programs such as the Southland Alibi literary magazine and the Writers' Program Network of Writers (WP NOW). The Intern will support the Writers' Program Program Manager, Program Representatives,and Student Advisor who all collaborate to make the events function successfully. Interns will learn how to conceptualize, design, plan, implement, and evaluate events by participating as a member of our team, and will learn how the Writers' Program uses these events to develop and support our diverse and inclusive community of writers, both students and non-students.

Interns day-to-day work will include researching promotional opportunities, completing event-related correspondence with speakers and attendees, coordinating space reservations or Zoom meetings, interacting with writers at all levels of experience, collecting information on speakers, copyediting and proofing materials, and creating discussion topics or prompts for an online community. Other duties specific to each event may be assigned with appropriate training and support provided.

The Intern will have opportunities to learn about social media community development, arts education programs, arts curriculum, and community engagement based on interest and internship timing.

Additional work may be assigned based on Intern's stated interest in other parts of our operations. We strive to offer a thorough and meaningful experience tailored to the Intern's specific needs and goals.

Position Qualifications:

Applicants must meet the Eligibility Guidelines as outlined by the Los Angeles County Department of Arts and Culture Arts Internship Program:

2022 Arts Internship positions will be open to currently enrolled undergraduate (2 or 4-year) and community college students who reside or attend college in Los Angeles County. Recent graduates may apply as long as they have completed their degree between May 1 - December 1, 2022. The Department of Arts and Culture encourages eligible students from all ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds, as well as disabled students, to apply. Eligible students may participate in the program once.
  • Writing and editing skills sufficient to compose and edit correspondence, copy and reports in a clear and concise manner, using proper syntax and grammar.
  • Ability to work as a team player, initiating/maintaining cooperative relationships with coworkers, managers and instructors and students, including problem resolution.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills to ensure effective and cooperative interaction with students, instructors, other staff members and other persons of various social, cultural, economic and educational backgrounds.
  • Working knowledge of Word and Excel and familiarity with the Microsoft applications sufficient to prepare correspondence, reports, and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to work some evenings and weekends.
  • Graphic Design interest and experience is a plus
NOTE:
  • Students who have already earned a BA, BS, or a higher degree are not eligible for the Los Angeles County Arts Internship Program.
  • Students who have previously participated in the program are not eligible to participate a second time.
  • Students who are invited to participate in the program will be asked to provide verification of eligibility via college transcripts, driver’s license, and other documents to show enrollment status and/or LA County residence.
