Overview

UCLA Extension is the open-access, self-supporting continuing education division of UCLA. The Department of Humanities and Sciences offers a wide variety of certificate programs and courses including transfer-credit, post-baccalaureate credit-bearing, continuing education (CEU) credit, and non-credit bearing general interest courses. Course disciplines span broad subject areas similar to those offered in the College of Letters and Science. UCLA Extension courses and certificate programs offer students the opportunity to learn from highly qualified instructors who hold advanced degrees and are passionate, skilled teachers.

Extension’s 400-series post-baccalaureate courses are comparable in content, presentation style, and level of instruction to courses in a professional degree program. Credit earned in these courses may lead to the award of formal certificates by UCLA Extension, and may be transferable for advanced standing in professional studies elsewhere, subject to the policies of the receiving institution.

JOURN X 452: Reporting for a Digital World
News media are shifting to a new paradigm: writing and delivering news at a digital pace for global audiences on multiple platforms, including television, desktop, or mobile phone. This course introduces you to how major networks prepare the news and use digital journalism to inform the world, becoming the biggest news websites across the globe. Journalists now collaborate more closely than ever to deliver the news on air and online if digital operations and networks want to maintain and build audiences. This means journalists must know the high skills of story selection, news judgment, pitches, assignment desk operations, pre- and post-production, and ultimately writing under intense pressure. This course exposes you to how networks gather the news and then create content for our emerging digital universe. Prerequisite: X 432 Reporting and Writing I strongly recommended, or equivalent knowledge and consent of the instructor. Required course toward Journalism Certificate.

The above course description is subject to change. The Humanities and Sciences Department at UNEX is currently working on restructuring the Journalism Certificate. With that might come some changes to the content included in this course. Candidate must be willing to work with the Program Director and Program Manager in modifying existing content as well as building new content as appropriate as part of the revamped Journalism Certificate.

Instructor Duties

• Develop or update course syllabus to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director and Program Manager
• Prepare course materials and learning assessments appropriate to the subject matter.
• Deliver instruction as assigned.
• Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform as appropriate.
• Post final student grades to the transcript system in a timely manner no later than 2 weeks after course end date.
• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
• Communicate with Program Director, Program Representatives and Online Course Managers in a timely manner.
• Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner.
• Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies responsive to Extension’s diverse student population.
• Respond to student inquiries about final grades and consult with Program Director as needed.
• Allow students to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months following the last class session.

Minimum Qualifications

• A minimum of 7-10 years of experience as a digital news reporter with proven track record of success writing and reporting news at a digital pace for global audiences on multiple platforms
• Advanced degree in Journalism or related discipline preferred
• Experience college level preferred
• Experience teaching adult learners preferred
• Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity
• Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey complex concepts and information
• Highly effective interpersonal skills
• Active affiliation and participation in relevant professional associations preferred
• Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) the use of instructional technology and online teaching tools

Special Conditions of Employment

Instructors are hired on a quarterly contract basis.

Compensation dependent on qualifications and experience.

Because Extension is a division of UCLA, all Extension degree-credit instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement.” The Instructor’s Contract outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and the compensation terms, subject to Extension policies and procedures. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed Instructor Contract. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the Instructor Contract, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.
