UCLA Extension is the open-access self-supporting continuing education division of UCLA. The Department of Humanities and Sciences offers a wide variety of certificate programs and courses including transfer-credit, post-baccalaureate credit-bearing, continuing education (CEU) credit, and non-credit bearing general interest courses. Course disciplines span broad subject areas similar to those offered in the College of Letters and Science. UCLA Extension courses and certificate programs offer students the opportunity to learn from highly qualified instructors who hold advanced degrees and are passionate, skilled teachers.

Extension’s transfer-credit courses bearing the “XL” prefix provide course content, academic rigor, and learning outcomes that are identical to those provided by their counterpart regular UCLA courses.

ECON XL 1: Principles of Economics - Microeconomics 
An introduction to the principles of economic analysis, economic institutions, and issues of economic policy, this course emphasizes allocation of resources and distribution of income through the price system. Instruction covers the behavior of firms and individuals and their interactions in the marketplace, gains from trade, and the determination of prices. Different market structures are examined, including perfect and imperfect competition and monopoly. Issues addressed include: Do markets allocate resources efficiently? Under what conditions is government intervention justified and what are the potential benefits? Basic concepts and analytical tools studied are applied to current events and policy issues whenever possible. 
September 25 - December 17; 11 weeks

ECON XL 2: Principles of Economics - Macroeconomics 
This introduction to the principles of economic analysis, economic institutions, and issues of economic policy emphasizes the determination of key macro-economic variables using simple models and concepts. Instruction covers the definition of gross domestic product, inflation, interest rates, and exchange rates. Students are exposed to relevant world issues, such as the causes and consequences of economic growth, unemployment, inflation, and public and trade deficits. Cross-country comparisons enable students to understand the disparities in economic conditions between developing and developed countries. The course concludes with the study of short-run economic fluctuations.
September 25 - December 17; 11 weeks

 

Instructor Duties

• Develop or update course syllabus to meet campus approval requirements, in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director.
• Prepare course materials and design online activities and learning assessments appropriate to the subject matter. By University of California policy, ownership of the rights to Course Materials, including copyright, resides with their originator/author.
• Deliver course via the Canvas Learning Management System.
• First-time Extension instructors: participate in paid Canvas and online pedagogy training course.
• Post final student grades to the transcript system in a timely manner no later than 2 weeks after course end date.
• Actively engage with students online during the course.
• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner.
• Communicate with Program Director, Program Representatives and Online Course Managers in a timely manner.
• Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner.
• Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies responsive to Extension’s diverse student population.
• Respond to student inquiries about final grades and consult with Program Director as needed.
• Allow students to review their final exams/papers for up to 13 months following the last class session.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D in Economics preferred; ABD in Economics with college-level teaching experience considered
• Experience teaching Economics at the college level
• Experience teaching online preferred
• Experience teaching adult learners preferred
• Commitment to the highest level of academic standards and integrity
• Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information
• Highly effective interpersonal skills
• Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) the use of instructional technology and online teaching tools

Special Conditions of Employment
 
Instructors are hired on a quarterly contract basis.
 
Compensation dependent on qualifications and experience.
 
Because Extension is a division of UCLA, all Extension degree-credit instructors and courses must be formally approved according to the regulations of the Academic Senate of the University of California. Eligibility to teach a course is contingent upon this formal academic approval. Once approved, teaching assignments are “by agreement.” The Instructor’s Contract outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and the compensation terms, subject to Extension policies and procedures. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed Instructor Contract. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be cancelled for any reason, the Instructor Contract, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided.
