Course Description:

This course provides exposure to the fundamentals of cross-cultural counseling of substance-abusing and dependent individuals. The cultural impact of race, nationality, gender, age, sexual orientation, religion, and socio-economic status on the development and progression of substance use disorders is explored. In addition, commonly encountered cultural obstacles to traditional chemical dependency counseling are examined. Suggestions are offered on how to culturally enrich existing counseling services and when to refer to alternative culturally specific treatment programs. This course also explores clinical aspects and current trends in the prevention and treatment of such diseases as tuberculosis; hepatitis A, B, and C; and HIV/AIDS. Topics include current issues in epidemiology, psychosocial issues and strategies to help clients, treatment planning for the whole person (not just the disease), culturally competent intervention, harm reduction strategies, and special counseling needs of HIV and other critically ill patients.

General Job Description:

The Department of Humanities and Sciences at UCLA Extension offers a wide variety of certificate programs and courses including transfer-credit (XL), post-baccalaureate credit-bearing (400-level), continuing education (CEU) credit, and non-credit-bearing general interest courses. UCLA Extension courses and certificate programs offer students the opportunity to learn from highly qualified practitioners who hold advanced degrees, are passionate about teaching and impart knowledge within their field of expertise.  Applications to teach are accepted throughout the year to fill immediate program needs and increase the depth of the instructor pool.

A current opening is available for an instructor to teach in the discipline of Community Health Sciences. Qualified applicants who have a PhD/PsyD in Clinical Psychology, Masters in Family Therapy or Social Work and experience with substance use disorder counseling as well as college-level teaching experience are encouraged to apply.

This course will be offered in the in-person format using the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) as a support tool.

Course schedule for the Fall 2022 Quarter:
Thursdays, September 22, 2022 – December 8, 2022

Instructor Duties:

• Update course syllabus in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director using an approved syllabus template
• Prepare and deliver course materials and learning assessments in assigned format
• As clearly outlined in the syllabus, communicate the Teaching Objectives and Specific Learning Outcomes to students and review the grading policies of the course
• Throughout the quarter, provide timely feedback on outcome of all learning assessments. Post individual student scores on secure Canvas LMS no later than one week from the date of exam/assignment
• Evaluate student achievement of Specific Learning Outcomes and assign grades
• Post final student grades to the transcript system in a timely manner no later than 2 weeks after the last date of course meeting
• Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
• Communicate about administrative matters with Program Director and Program Representative in a timely manner
• Utilize the Canvas LMS as the platform for this course which is offered in the in-person format
• Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field
• Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including: complete all hiring paperwork; submit updated quarterly syllabus; post bio and photo on the UCLA Extension website; review and sign quarterly contract; order required texts
• Apply cultural humility, evidence-based teaching strategies and culturally competent methodologies in the classroom inclusive of a diverse domestic and international student population
• Respond to student inquiries about final grades and consult with Program Director as needed
• Keep final exams/papers for up to 13 weeks following the last class session of each course and allow students to access them during that time period

 Minimum Qualifications:

• PhD/PsyD in Clinical Psychology, Masters in Family Therapy or Social Work and experience in substance use disorder counseling 
• College-level teaching experience required
• Licensure in clinical psychology, social work, marriage and family therapy or certified drug and alcohol counseling
• Must be committed to maintaining the highest level of academic standards and integrity
• Highly effective oral and written communication skills
• Highly effective interpersonal skills
• Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) the use of instructional technology and online learning management systems including but not limited to the Canvas Learning Management System
• Active participation in continuing education and professional development to remain current in the field.
