Description

UCLA Extension is looking for Clinical Practicum Instructors to supervise students in the UCLA Medical Assistant Program either in a UCLA Clinical Site or the Simulation/Lab Setting. Requirements include:

  • Clinical Expertise with 4+ years of clinical experience with understanding of Ambulatory Care Practice
  • Baccalaureate in Nursing
  • Strong Interpersonal Skills – willingness to communicate with sensitivity and understanding with students, patients, clinic staff, and program faculty
  • Possess and demonstrate professionalism, positively, and willingness to be flexible
  • Team Player – committed to students’ success

 

Summary Statement

Under the general supervision of the Program Director, the Clinical Practicum Instructor will provide clinical supervision and instruction to MA Program Students in the UCLA Clinical or Simulation/Lab Setting. The Instructor will mentor students to meet the goals of the program to ensure students demonstrate entry-level medical assistant skills and competencies and develop effective work habits, including interpersonal skills and time management.

Job Description

Clinical Site:

  • Serves as a primary contact with the Office Staff/Practice Manager and Clinicians where student practices
  • Communicates with assigned students regarding scheduling, canceling assigned clinical rotations
  • Distributes information to students and ensures students’ requirements are completed under direction of Program Director which include
    • Current CPR, Physical, and TB Records
    • Completed Clinic Orientation Check List
    • Signed Confidentiality and Abuse Statements
    • Completed UCLA Employee Handbook post-test
    • Completed HIPPA security and privacy post-test
    • Completed CI-Care Training post-test
  • Assist in orienting the student to the clinic/office as coordinated in collaboration with Program Director
  • Monitors student activities during the rotation, providing supervision during direct patient care activities based upon level of the student and type of procedure
  • Provides verbal and written feedback in a sensitive and collaborative manner to student to guide learning
  • Completes evaluation tools on the student throughout the assignment and forwards to Program Director in a timely manner for student’s file
  • Recognizes when student does not meet the standards of the Program, makes recommendations to the Program Director
  • Assist in scheduling student rotations
  • Notifies Program Director for any issues noted in clinical site

Simulation/Lab:

  • Plans and Organizes Instruction of skills in ways that maximize documented student learning
  • Employs appropriate teaching and learning strategies to communicate subject matter to students
  • Modify when appropriate, instructional methods and strategies to meet diverse student needs
  • Employ available instruction technology when appropriate
  • Contribute to the selection and development of instructional materials in accordance with course objectives
  • Develop course materials as delegated by Program Director, when applicable
  • Coordinates Skill stations, coordinates standardized patients as delegated by Program Director, when applicable
  • Participates in set-up and clean-up of Skills and Simulation Stations when applicable
  • Evaluates students’ performance in laboratory setting and provides feedback to students and faculty
  • Provides remediation to students when necessary
  • Provides updates to Program Director regarding students’ performance and progress and/or remediation needs
  • Notifies Program Director for any issues noted in simulation lab

General:

  • Participates in program meetings and events as required by Program
  • Demonstrates a thorough and accurate knowledge of Medical Assistant Practice
  • Connects their expertise with Medical Assistant Role
  • Establishes meaningful connects with students and faculty
