Overview
The Department of Business, Management, and Legal Programs offers over 400 professional courses and 18 certificate programs that are designed to meet the needs of business professionals at all levels, including those who want to update their skills, change careers or prepare for industry certifications or exams. Our programs are designed to provide flexible enrollment options for students to initiate their professional development anytime during the year. Through our commitment to academic excellence, professionals can acquire the skills and knowledge they need to face a world of continual change. We seek instructors who are world-class experts in their field with extensive hands-on experience as community leaders and working professionals. 
Applications to teach are accepted throughout the year in order to fill immediate program needs and to increase the depth of the instructor pool.

Professionals and industry experts with subject matter expertise in the legal, regulatory, banking, sales, product and marketing dimensions of the legal cannabis trade are encouraged to submit resumes in consideration to teach future courses, which may be held on on line or on ground at  Extension's Westwood/UCLA Campus, Downtown Los Angeles or Woodland Hills locations.

The Cannabis Education Program is preparing to offer educational courses, seminars and certificate programs along these dimensions: 

Overview of Business and Management of Cannabis

  • Licensing
  • Dispensary regulations
  • Advocacy for cannabis retailers

Sales, Marketing, Supply and Branding

  • Retail locations
  • App/delivery service
  • Wholesale suppliers
  • Tribal partnerships
  • Consumer profile
  • Edibles, oils and other delivery systems

Health and Lifestyle

  • Migration from medical card holders to recreational
  • Problem use
  • Potency
  • Child-safe product design and packaging
  • Perceptions/acceptance of recreational use

Legal and Financial

  • Taxes/stamps
  • Cash/banking
  • Product liability/supplement, comestible or other?
  • Governance levels - city/county/state/federal
  • History and politics of cannabis in US

Specific Instructor Duties
  • Develop and/or update course syllabus in consultation with the UCLA Extension Program Director as assigned using approved syllabus template
  • Prepare and deliver course materials and learning assessments in assigned format (face-to-face; online)
  • Utilize the Canvas Learning Management System as the course support platform in face-to-face courses and as the delivery platform in online courses.
  • Communicate Teaching Objectives and Specific Learning Outcomes to students.
  • Respond to student questions and learning needs in a timely manner
  • Communicate with Program Director, Program Representatives and Online Course Managers in a timely manner
  • Stay current regarding the professional body of knowledge in the field of addictions
  • Complete required administrative tasks in a timely manner including: completing all hiring paperwork; submitting updated quarterly syllabus; posting bio and photo on the UCLA Extension website; signing quarterly contract; ordering required texts; communicating AV and classroom needs. 
  • Employ culturally competent teaching methodologies in the classroom inclusive of both domestic and international student populations
  • Respond to student inquiries about final grades and consult with Program Director as needed  
Minimum Qualifications
  • Instructors in legal/regulatory/banking areas should have an advanced degree from an accredited institution
  • Instructors in other areas should have expert level hands-on and/or consulting experience within their subject matter. 
  • Prior teaching or training experience preferred
  • Experience designing curriculum and measuring student performance preferred
  • Must be committed to the highest level of academic standards and integrity
  • Highly effective oral and written communication skills, including the ability to convey conceptual and complex ideas and information
  • Highly effective interpersonal skills
  • Proficiency in (or willingness to learn) the use of instructional technology and online teaching tools
 Special Conditions of Employment
 
Instructor compensation for courses wil vary by course length.
 
Instructors are hired on a quarterly contract basis. 
 
Teaching assignments are “by agreement.” The Instructor’s Contract outlines the deliverables for the course, the course schedule, and the compensation terms, subject to Extension policies and procedures. UCLA Extension makes no commitment to hire an instructor until it has sent and received a signed Instructor Contract. Should the course section an instructor plans to teach be canceled for any reason, the Instructor Contract, including rights to compensation for future section meetings, is voided. Remuneration is for classroom hours only and does not include time spent for course preparation or other events.
